Chris Foss Sci-Fi Art and Illustrations
Christopher Foss is a British illustrator and science fiction artist, best known for his sci-fi book covers. Since the 1970s, he has been one of the world’s leading sci-fi artists, and had a huge influence on his artist peers, as well as filmmakers. Chris Foss has created over a thousand book cover artworks for world-famous authors such as Frank Herbert, Isaac Asimov, E. E. 'Doc' Smith, Arthur C. Clarke, A. E. Van Vogt, Philip K. Dick, Jack Vance, and many others. Foss’s evocative sci-fi book covers pioneered a much-imitated style featuring vast, colourful spaceships, machines and cities, often marked with mysterious symbols. Human figures are usually absent. These images are suggestive of science fiction in general rather than depictions of specific scenes from books, as not being a fan of science fiction, Foss typically did not read the books he illustrated, preferring to paint scenes entirely from his imagination. He has also worked in film design on Dune, Superman, Alien, Flash Gordon, Stanley Kubrick’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy released in 2014.
